Newgrange tickets: what the OPW says
You can only visit Newgrange on a guided tour from the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre. A shuttle bus takes you from there to the tomb. If you go straight to the monument, you will not get in.
The OPW (Office of Public Works), which runs the site, says no other seller may sell Newgrange tickets. People with resold tickets are turned away. A day tour is a separate product, so read what it says about entry before you book.
Every visitor needs a ticket, including children and babies. Under-18s must come with an adult. You can visit the exhibition alone without booking.
Newgrange tour times and booking windows
Tickets go on sale at midnight, Irish time. For tours from 1 April to 1 November, you can book 30 days ahead. For tours from 2 November to 1 March, you can book 7 days ahead. Cancelled places come back online, often 08:30 to 09:30 and 15:00 to 16:00.
From 1 March to 1 November, the main tour includes the Newgrange chamber. From 2 November to 28 February, there is one tour: Newgrange and the exhibition.
| Months | Hours |
|---|---|
| January, February, November, December | 09:00–16:15 |
| March, April, October | 09:30–16:45 |
| May to September | 09:00–17:45 |
More of the Boyne Valley: Knowth and Monasterboice
Knowth is the other Boyne Valley monument you can visit, also by guided tour from the visitor centre. There is no access to the chambers at Knowth. From March to 1 November, there is one limited Knowth tour a day.
Monasterboice has old high crosses and two churches. One of our picks stops there on the way to Belfast.
Newgrange by bus on your own
Take the train from Dublin to Drogheda, on the Dublin to Belfast line. From Drogheda MacBride Station, Local Link route 163 goes to Brú na Bóinne in about 35 minutes. The September 2025 timetable shows six buses a day, from 08:40 to 17:45. Check the current timetable before you go, and book your Newgrange tour first.
The bus needs a train to Drogheda first; with a car you drive to the visitor centre.
Tips before you book a Newgrange tour
Book early
The OPW says booking ahead is essential. For tours from 1 April to 1 November, tickets go on sale 30 days ahead; from 2 November to 1 March, 7 days ahead.
Check what the tour says about entry
The OPW refuses resold Newgrange tickets. Read what your day tour says about Newgrange entry before you book.
Check the cancellation cut-off
Both picks show free cancellation on GetYourGuide. Check the exact cut-off on the listing before you book.
Weather can change opening times
The OPW says the visitor centre can change its hours at short notice because of the weather.
